On February 7, 2006, J Dilla turned 32 and Donuts came out. Three days later, he was gone.
A year on, DJ Soul and Okayplayer answered with Assorted Donuts: A Tribute to J Dilla. It started as Soul remixing tracks from Donuts, then grew when Talib Kweli handed him a freestyle over an unreleased Dilla beat and a Dilla remix of The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick in the Door" surfaced. Okayplayer later said that remix appeared exclusively on this tape.
The rest is twenty tracks of Dilla blends: Nas's "Hope," Jay-Z's "Song Cry," Jadakiss's "Why," Big L's "Put It On," and more, with freestyles from Black Thought and from Busta Rhymes, Rah Digga, and Young Zee. It closes on Dilla's own "Won't Do."
From the Crate
"Dilla's own remix of Biggie, on a free mixtape from 2007."
One More Thing
Donuts is in the shop, along with Slum Village's Fantastic Vol. 2 and Vol. 0. Busta Rhymes' Dillagence II, built from unreleased Dilla beats, is open for pre-order and due November 27.
