In the summer of 2010, Wale had a problem. Attention Deficit, his major label debut, arrived in 2009 with real hype and a Lady Gaga feature, and it did not land the way anyone expected. The D.C. rapper who made his name on mixtapes needed to sound like himself again.
So he went back to Seinfeld.
On August 3, 2010, More About Nothing hit the internet as a free download, mixed by DJ Omega. It pulled 100,000 downloads in its first three hours and was trending worldwide on Twitter before it even dropped. The tape opens with The Problem, a track about why the album did not connect, then runs twenty-one tracks deep with Seinfeld clips stitching everything together.
Here is the part we love most. DJ Omega did not just mix it. He co-produced the opener and two more records alongside Kosmik. Years later, Jerry Seinfeld said the call that got him into the studio for The Album About Nothing came from Wale and DJ Omega.
The full story is in the vault now, with the original 21-track mix streaming in full.
From the Crate
"Sometimes the DJ is the person helping carry a concept from a free download all the way to a sitcom legend's phone."
One More Thing
The tape took twelve years to get an official release, and Jerry Seinfeld helped clear the samples. That cleared version is on CD in the shop, seventeen tracks in a Digipak. It is a different cut from the original DJ Omega mix, so think of it as the companion piece to what you just heard in the archive.
